Generation Unlimited Launches in South Africa: Youth Leading the Way in Digital Innovation and Sustainable Development

On August 12, 2024, South Africa marked International Youth Day with the official launch of Generation Unlimited, a global initiative dedicated to ensuring that every young person is in education, training, or employment by 2030. The event was aligned with this year's International Youth Day theme: "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development." This youth-led launch was a testament to the power and potential of young people in driving change, especially in the digital era.

The launch event kicked off with a feedback session from the "AMAGENGE" crew, UNICEF's university volunteer program. This session focused on how digital innovations can empower youth in entrepreneurship, education, and training. A key outcome from the discussion was the urgent need to ensure that no one is left behind as we transition into the 5th Industrial Revolution. This includes addressing the challenges faced by low-tech areas and ensuring that young people from all backgrounds have access to the necessary tools and training to thrive in the digital world. The session also touched on essential topics such as cybersecurity and online advocacy, underscoring the importance of preparing young people to navigate the complexities of the digital age.

Following the feedback session, a panel discussion brought together key partners of Generation Unlimited. The panel emphasized the importance of inclusivity, particularly for those living with disabilities, and highlighted the critical role of partnerships in supporting youth-led initiatives. The discussion also explored the value of creating intergenerational spaces where youth and elders can share opportunities, experiences, and knowledge, with young people taking the lead in these conversations. Furthermore, the dialogue delved into the integration of digital technologies in promoting a just world and addressing climate injustice in South Africa.

The Generation Unlimited launch in South Africa serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of young people to drive sustainable development and create a more inclusive future. By harnessing digital innovations and fostering intergenerational collaboration, this initiative is paving the way for a brighter, more equitable world for all.
